about

“There’s nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.”
-Octavia E. Butler, “Parable of the Trickster,” unpublished

Half slow and half fast, New Suns consists wholly of recordings from an ARP 2500 synthesizer. Simple Oankali Greeting imagines an otherworldly form of communication via direct sensation, inspired by the Oankali people in Octavia Butler’s novel Dawn. Cipher Braid considers how information might be woven into evolving textures and intuitive patterns. A dive into mysterious waters, Unakite Pool shows half-familiar vistas through an eerie light. Finally, Slip Jigs is a bittersweet butterfly ecstasy.

Warren’s work expresses “a certain combination of the synthetic and the fuzzy with the deeply human” (Jazz Right Now). By exploring the ARP 2500’s unique musical possibilities, New Suns considers how we might dance, how we might breathe, in a future after the winds have risen and the rains have gone.
