about
"Adam Lay Ybounden" is a 15th century Middle English poem describing Adam's original sin and the benevolence of "our lady [in] hevene quen." Many composers have set this text for singers; my favorite setting by far is Frank Ferko's 1992 choral version. I performed my concertina reflection of "Adam," a considerable slowing of Ferko's beautiful hymn with some added dissonance, at Providence's 2023 Bach Festival. This is the performance recording.
To me, this piece is about letting one's mind turn to thoughts of heaven, even as one is witnessing hell on earth.
